HISTORICAL DUCK HUNTING DISPLAY

The “1899 Get There Duck Boat” is pulled by a 1911 Model T Ford. The display will show a hunting party stopped for the night. The Get There Duck Boat is a steel stamped boat manufactured by The Mullins Company of Salem, Ohio.

The Mullins Company made steel stamped Victorian trim for commercial buildings from 1800’s to the early 1900’s. Their first venture into steel stamped boats was the Get There Duck Boat which was produced in the late 1800’s. After the Duck Boats, several other steel stamped boats followed.

The Get There Duck Boat featured Allen’s Bow Facing Oars, a $6.00 accessory in the 1890’s.

The automobile pulling the boat trailer manufactured by A Mullins Handy Cart, is a Model T Ford. The Model T Ford made its introduction 100 years ago in 1908. The Model T fast became the car of choice and held 53% of the World’s market. The popularity of the Model T was due to its reliability and low cost. The Model T proved its reliability in 1909 by winning the first cross-country race, which started in New York and ended in Spokane, Washington. Soon after production was under way, the price of the Model T dropped to about the same price as a good horse and buggy. A good example of the low cost of the Ford is seen when comparing it to a 1919 Pierce Arrow Touring Car which cost $7,600.00. The Model T Touring car came in at $380.00, making the Ford in reach of any family making a good living.

At night our duck hunter will be sleeping in a tent bed. This unique bed was made with a tent built over it and was carried on the running board of the Model T in a wooden box.

Be sure to stop by and see a part of early American history and talk with David Woodworth. David has been supplying historical auto camping displays for over 25 years and is noted for his historical accuracy. He has provided auto camping displays for The Smithsonian Institute, PPS and the History Channel. David is always looking for photos and early camping equipment.

During the summer, he and his wife, Sheran run a Bed and Breakfast at Yosemite National Park called “The Tin Lizzie Inn”. He also rents out original Model T and Model A Fords for people to drive in the park. You can reach him through his web site driveamodelt.com.
